During an off-the-record chat with the CEO of a boutique investment bank, he remarked that Conscious Capitalism made it sound like ordinary capitalists were “unconscious.” Well…
Modern corporations have a powerful impact and influence on society. When major companies and global banking institutions profit by exploiting workers, customers, colleagues, community, and the environment in an irresponsible way, the results can be catastrophic for people and planet. Climate change and the global financial crisis are just two examples of unconscious capitalistic behavior. With those tragic events, trust in business to serve society in positive ways has eroded. One solution that has emerged is the six-year-old movement of Conscious Capitalism.
What is a Conscious Capitalist? In its own words:
“Conscious Capitalists are unapologetic advocates for free markets, entrepreneurship, competition, freedom to trade, property rights, and the rule of law. They recognize that these are essential elements of a healthy, functioning economy, as are trust, compassion, collaboration, and value-creation.”
Co-founder John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s former President Doug Rauch, Good-b friends and contributors: Jeff Klein of Working for Good, Chip Conley of Joie de Vivre Hotels, Patricia Aburdene of Mega Trends, Raj Sisodia & Shubhro Sen of CCI are some of the movements most outspoken supporters.
The Conscious CEO Summit
This year’s Conscious Capitalism CEO Summit will take place October 9-11 in Austin, Texas. Some of the program’s newest speakers will include: Tony Hsieh of Zappos, New York’s Sustainable Restaurant maverick Danny Meyer, Brad Anderson of Best Buy, the founder of Method Products, Eric Ryan, the Motley Fool guys and the hot “Life is good” CEO (O for Optimist), Bert Jacobs.
Okay, so where are all the women speakers? Well, there is one: Amy Lyman from The Great Place to Work Institute. There just aren’t a lot of female CEOs out there of major corporations – an issue that all of us at Good-b seek to change! : )
Women CEOs or not, this is a conference worth going to if you are a C-Suite exec of major company or if you simply care about incorporating honor, integrity, and transparency into 21st century capitalism.
From Conscious Capitalism:
