Yummy chocolates inspired by classic New York City culture, art and humor (ya talkin’ to me?), the Chocolate Bar has become a neighborhood staple. The crux of Chocolate Bar’s mission: “In working with some of the top chocolate makers and artists we have discovered that the best products are created when we’re having fun!” But you might have even more fun eating them!

Bread and Chocolate:
Lower East Side: Prohibition Bakery (9 Clinton Street just below Houston)
Prohibition Bakery was founded in 2011 by a local NYC Baker and a Bartender. The result is helping New Yorkers and visitors get drunk through their love of sugar and vice! Nope, seriously…this is a bakery that has re-invented the cupcake using rum, mulled, wine, vodka, Frangelica, kahlua, whiskey, gin, tequila, scotch, and beer! Something for every alcoholic or Party Girl or Boy handmade of course by locals! But the sober among you need not worry! The French have been using booze in their recipes for years (think Crêpe Suzette). When cooked to a high temperature, the alcohol wears off and the flavor remains. Also, innovative from PB is a new recipe partnership with Fair Trade Divine Chocolate: the Divine Saucy Pumpkin Cupcake made with Port, Cocoa, and Espresso. Yum! No shipping yet, but NYC delivery with 24hr notice.
Clinton Street Baking Company & Restaurant (4 Clinton Street)
Just because Martha Stewart has discovered it, doesn’t mean that this awesome little restaurant/bakery has shed it’s natural Brooklyn roots. Flatbush native and Owner/Chef Neil Kleinberg was the Executive Chef of Sheepshead Bay’s Famous Lundy’s (“aka THE family seafood destination of the Northern hemisphere”) before opening this little wonder with wife, DeDe Lahman. Dubbed “King of the Biscuits” by Diva Martha, Kleinberg calls his food: “a little Jewish Deli, a little Mexican, and American takeout.” In addition to “hand-crafted in small batches” locally sourced organic Farm to Chef baked goods, Clinton St. serves the “perfect omelette” and signature blueberry pancakes.
Husband and wife also offer free nutrition and cooking classes to neighborhood kids from Hamilton-Madison settlement house. Additionally, Neil and DeDe are “chef/partners for PS 333 on behalf of Wellness in the Schools (WITS) – an organization that inspires healthy eating, environmental awareness and fitness as a way of life for kids in New York City’s public schools.”
